Abstract

This study disscuss the dynamics of slametan as a religious ritual of Javanese society in Karangan. Today, the reality of slametan is far different from the previous period. The factors that cause changes in slametan are ideology, economy and social. However, slametan is still the most routine socio-religious ritual compared to other rituals. Thus, this article aims to explain the common thread of the two statements above. The research method used is a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Data search uses in-depth interview techniques, direct observation, and literature studies. Research informants include religious leaders, community leaders and the community who carry out slametan. Observations are made by directly observing the implementation of slametan and being involved in it. While the references used are books, journals and previous research results. The data is then viewed from the structural functional perspective of Radcliffe Brown. This study then shows that there has been a change in slametan in society. Slametan has left its previous mystical characteristics and turned into a pious religious ritual. However, this change is an effort to adapt in the midst of changing conditions so that the function of the ritual remains optimal. The existence of changes is actually to maintain the existence of this ritual in society.
